During the renaissance people who had money would use it to buy artwork or literature. These purchases would demonstrate their power because the Renaissance was a time period focused on art and those who could fund it were viewed favorably.

Here is a short video clip that describes some of what P.diddy (Sean Combs) has done to accumulate power in todays society. As stated in the video P.Diddy over the years has started his own label, created numerous t.v shows, opened resturants and has created a clothing line with his money. I chose this clip to describe P.diddy because it discusses how he invested his money in other artists and artistic avenues in order to increase his power. While you are watching the clip think about how P.diddy might be considered a modern day patron of the arts.

Please come to class prepared to discuss both your experince at the website and how P.diddy might be considered a modern patron of the arts. In order to fully answer the question you should analyze why P.diddy invested in producing other artists or art and how that connects to the patrons of the arts during the Renaissance. You may address these questions in a comment below.
I think it's very interesting the amount of control patrons of the arts end up having over what makes it into the media as popular culture and what doesn't, or has to take a longer route.
ReplyDeleteJust because someone has money doesn't mean they have the best taste, but whatever someone supports is what ends up being brought to the public. It's good that artists and such can produce their art, but challenging when you think that the general public is not really choosing at all - just consuming
ReplyDeleteThat was a fun game online. Ended up getting my painting done in oil, and it lasted for 500 years but no one had any idea who I was... Oh well. Anyway I think that a lot of artists realize how hard it is to make yourself known, and in such are will to support others in need of... patronage. I guess this can be seen as adding to ones have a though, especially in P. Diddy's case with buying restaurants and such. Everyone knows I would definitely have a statue of myself made if I had the money. Again; Oh well...
ReplyDeleteI would assume that Diddy (as he is now known, sans P), invested in the talent he did because he thought it was an accurate representation of his label. In doing so, he perpetuates his image, and in addition what that image represents.
